Computers

Understand where your files and agents run.

This device

Local projects use the tools installed on your device. Macaron shows running processes and ports so you can see what is using your computer. Isolated workspaces are optional and require their own runtime.

Kinds of computer

Choose where each project runs from the chip in the composer.

  • This computer: agents work directly in your folders, as you.
  • An isolated computer on this device: a Linux container in Docker Desktop that cannot reach your files, keys or Docker socket.
  • Your own server over SSH: a machine you already run, reached with key-based SSH.
  • macaron.sh cloud (Pro): a machine Macaron sets up for you, which keeps working while your computer sleeps.

Isolate from your computer

Turn on isolation for a project and its agents run on an isolated computer instead of on your files. Macaron copies the folder in as a sandbox copy, and Apply to Mac brings the result back when you are ready.

Previews and ports

Dev servers on ports 3000, 5173 and 8080 can be opened from this device. For a computer reached over SSH, Macaron opens an SSH tunnel to the port, so the server never has to listen on a public address.

Hosted computers

Hosted machines use credits while running. When credits run out, supported providers stop the machine and preserve its disk for a grace period. Add credits before its deletion deadline to keep it. Providers that bill stopped machines may delete them instead. Check the machine’s actual status before relying on retained files.

FAQ

Can an agent on an isolated computer delete files on my Mac?

No. An isolated computer only sees its own disk. Your folder changes only when you choose Apply to Mac.

Do cloud computers need Docker?

No. A macaron.sh cloud computer is already a separate machine, so agents run on it directly over SSH.

How do I stop paying for a cloud computer?

Stop it from Computers to pay the lower stopped rate, or delete it on macaron.sh to stop paying for it at all.
